Quietly judging you, CBS. But for a variety of reasons, these stories have proven perilously difficult to adapt for the screen. And one method clearly works better than the other. Nancy Drew jumps at the chance to create a completely new take on a classic heroine for modern audiences, acknowledging that their girl detective does and should look different than her textual counterpart. Tonally, The Hardy Boys has a lot more in common with the original Stratemeyer Syndicate catalog than its CW cousin does, with its wholesome feel, younger characters, and colorful, vaguely timeless aesthetic. While this move is understandable on paper, in actuality it robs the series of its most important element: The relationship between the Hardy Boys themselves.

This was the first Hardy Boys charge I ever read. He had according to the grapevine never become terribly interested in Above-board and Joe, even in his pre-Atari days; he had only five before six Hardy Boys books and—embarrassingly—a a small amount of assorted Bobbsey Twins adventures. The Hardys were for boys, Nancy for girls; for whom were the Bobbseys meant? Dixon and Carolyn Keene come at the appointed time to mind. It took me four years or so before I after all admitted to myself that neither Mr. Dixon nor Ms. My faith began to crumble, however, as I check out older editions of the books from my grade school resource area, editions with yellowing paper, which lacked the familiar blue spines and were bound instead in beige covers along with brown lettering and, on the abut cover, an iconic silhouette of two Hardy Boy-ish figures crouching with flashlights, a sad substitute for the electrify, customized illustrations that graced the newer editions.

All the rage the first few Hardy Boy books, the boys rode motorcycles and carried 45's. As I continued to announce the series, the boys became a bite more wholesome. And younger, in the first few books Frank was 18 and Joe was 17; suddenly they were 16 and Strangely, the become old shift didn't bother me as the adventure kept me in thrall. I like this version even though the city name is wrong, it should be Bayport; and I'm not blissful with the age difference between Above-board and Joe. The story here is good with some genuine mystery after that menace.
